We haven’t checked in with the Great American Temper Tantrum lately, so let’s look there. Now I’ll say it again, whether or not these hearings bring any serious opprobriate measures – legal or otherwise – against Trump or any of the participants is up in the air. They are, however, funny as hell and that’s worth the attention all on its own.

Let’s make sure we’re all caught up first. The United States House Select Committee on the January 6th Attacks first met on July 1. The GOP fought against even having the thing and when it was inevitable, tried to put up ringers like Jim Jordon on the panel. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi nixed that idea quickly because come on. She did, however, manage to avoid any sensible accusations of partisanship by assigning spots to conservative stalwarts Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

However, since the two have spoken against Trump’s Big Lie – and loyalty to Trump is the only real guiding principle of the Republican Party – they are liberal RINO traitors. Amusingly in Chenney’s case, she’s one of the most conservative members of the House and voted with Trump more than any other member, but there ya go. That’s politics in this, the 2,021st Foul Year of Our Lord. In any event, she and my main man Bennie Thompson head up the committee.

News out of the committee has been fairly commonplace for most of the year, mainly marked with Trump trying to invoke executive privilege and President Joe Biden telling him to go skip rope. But all that’s changed in recent weeks. Former Trump consigliere Steve Bannon has been indicted with contempt of court for refusing to answer a subpoena. Former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows had initially been co-operating with the Committee, partly because his recently released tell-all book gave a lot of dirt on the Trump White House.

He’s changed his tune recently, however, and while I’m skipping over a whole lot, this brings us up to where we need to be. Meadows’s involvement has recently lit a serious fire under the situation, particularly given just who all was sending him texts on that fateful day. And brother, that is some amusing shit.

Not only are there examples of Don Jr. trying to get his dad’s attention, but texts from Fox News personalities Laura Ingraham and Sean Hannity. They’re all begging Meadows to get Trump to do something, anything once the temper tantrum spiraled out of control. Of course, Trump sat on his thumbs and the Fox folks went on television that evening to tell everyone it was all Antifa’s fault for some reason because that makes all kinds of sense.

Another text released today has perhaps the most aggressive strategy suggested overturning the will of the voters the very day of the 2020 election. It suggested that governors of Republican-led states like Georgia and Pennsylvania throw out electoral votes and send their own people to give Trump the election. The funniest part? These texts for all the world look like they came from former Texas governor, Secretary of Energy, and absolute doorknob Rick “Gov. Goodhair” Perry. He’s denying it, of course, but the texts came from a phone registered in his full name.

This is all most interesting because, as of November 4, none of these states had made their final count as to just who won the electoral votes. Most were still counting votes, but Perry argued they should be thrown out anyway. Another amusing text came from Jim Jordan which encouraged Vice-President Mike Pence to throw out the results given by the legal count and give the election to Trump. In case you wondered why he was rejected for the committee, there you go. The texts also connect more and more GOP lawmakers to Trump’s attempt to overturn the will of the voters, most recently Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry.

I’m not sure where we go from here, but there is one interesting aspect that popped up today. Despite fighting it like a boar hog, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said today that recent events show that the public needs to know what happened leading up to and on January 6. Despite Trump’s near-total control of the GOP base, the party leaders aren’t so hot for him. McConnell knows a good thing when he sees it, of course, but he’s never been Trump’s biggest fan. Subpoenas have been issued for everyone from Brad Pascale to Roger Stone to Alex Jones, pretty much everyone involved in the temper tantrum.

Regardless, it will get more entertaining, I feel safe in claiming that.
