Okay, so it’s been one of those days. Let’s move past that, though, and see if we can’t pull the last few teeth out of October before we start it all over again.
President Joe Biden was trying to get a vote rolling on his Build Back Better plan up and done before he spent the weekend visiting the pope, but it didn’t work out that way. He’s been getting it from both sides of the Democratic Party. Everyone knows about Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, but the progressive wing of the party has not been quiet about its disappointment with how the bill’s scope has been paired down from the initial $3.5 trillion offer.
It looks like we might get $1.75 trillion all told. It’d be a good deal, considering, but very disappointing for a lot of folks. There seemed like a brief moment yesterday when a decent paid leave plan might squeak through, but Manchin, in particular, heard the call of his controllers and put a kibosh on that. Why they’re so against such a thing is beyond me, particularly given the amount of bullshit we as a society heap on the need for breeders. But there you go.
We’ll be getting something, just not this week. Basically how this works is the White House makes an office, both the Senate and the House write bills based on that offer, and the round of voting and possible vetoing make it all into law. The White House has put out its offer, so we’re at the part where the houses are hashing something out. The progressive wing is ready to go, but apparently, Manchin and Simena are still being pills. What Biden’s asking is pretty decent, all told, but there are hurdles.
And lest we forget, as big as pain as the Gentlefolk from South Carolina and Arizona are big pains in the dick, they wouldn’t even be an issue if it weren’t a foregone conclusion that every single one of the 50 Republicans in the Senate would vote against anything and everything put it from of them if it helps Biden at all. A lot of folks on the left – from liberals to leftists – are frustrated with Biden and the Democratic Party, and there are good reasons. Again, though, the GOP isn’t going to do a thing to help Biden and your plebe ass is just acceptable losses.
Moving on, there’s been a war of words on Twitter between Mississippi State Auditor Shad White and Brett Farve. If you’ll recall, Farve was one of the folks dinged for taking some of the cash embezzled by a number of folks intended to low-income Mississippians on welfare. The former quarterback and Crocs model was paid over $1.1 million for speeches he never gave.
Once things came to light, Farve paid $600,000 but still owes over eight hundred grand, including interest payments. Farve says he doesn’t appreciate being slandered because he’d never knowingly take the money and not give the speeches to the plebes. White says that’s bull shit, going so far as to say Farve is actively lying. The family at the center of this web, Nancy New and sons, have pled not guilty to charges of fraud and embezzlement but no one buys that.
All right, then, that’s all I’m going to fool with. Halloween is this weekend and, if that’s your bag, have a good time and stay safe. And remember: no one is giving edibles to your kids. That just isn’t going to happen. Those damn things are expensive and kids act goofy enough on their own.
