I won’t get into the details why, but for various reasons, it’s 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning as I post this. In short, between my internet access and WordPress being a pill, I couldn’t get anything done for the longest time. When I did, I couldn’t post and so decided to take a little nap and, well, here we are. Anyhow.
It’s actually been kind of a dull day. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema’s wish to knee-cap President Joe Biden’s attempts at legislation look to be going as they’d planned. Why, I still don’t know, apart from that old bit is wisdom “follow the money.” One of the sticking points in his climate plan is a switch to “clean energy,” meaning less coal and gas and more wind and solar. It would also require stricter pollution requirements for all cars by 2030.
The plan has a 150 billion dollar price tag but is supposed to be one of those “it’ll pay for itself and, besides, we really don’t have much choice if we want to keep drinking potable water” type of deals. However, Manchin’s been fighting it like it was trying to steal his supper. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that the Gentleman from West Virginia’s considerable fortune rests on a pair of coal mines he profited from back in the ’80s, but there you go.
The two senators have drawn a good bit of ire from pretty much the entire left, not just from progressives upset about, well, their politics but run-of-the-mill liberals and Democrats miffed their scuttling Biden’s attempts at making the country a little less shitty. Sinema’s hard at work trashing any attempts to lower drug prices and extend health care availability while raking in buckets from pharma companies. Worse than Manchin, maybe, is her apparent callousness. If she’s not claiming to be “overqualified” for president’s, she’s jetting off to Europe for fundraising. And, yes, what she’s doing isn’t illegal, it’s just tacky as hell.
She’ll more than likely see a primary challenge, though I personally doubt she cares. There’s a lot of debate about why she’s pulling what she’s pulling, though I say it’s so she can be cable news’ latest “even this liberal agrees with conservatives.” Manchin’s probably safe because it’s West Virginia, but neither would have much of a life in the GOP. Ah, that’s politics, I suppose.
I’m tired of talking about them, so let’s get into some good news. We’re down to 411 new cases of COVID yesterday here in Mississippi with 10 deaths. The number’s been dropping all week and while there really isn’t much new to add to the whole scene – we’re still under a State of Emergency and some schools are lightening up on their mask mandates – but I think it’s good news worth repeating anyway. Despite state Republicans’ attempt to make things as bad as possible, vaccination efforts here in Mississippi seem to be doing the job.
I don’t know what else and I’m in no mood to try to dig up anything interesting. The weather’s supposed to get stupid again, and State faces Alabama this weekend. I imagine the Bulldogs are already preparing the vengeance-driven stomping the Tide will be looking to give come Saturday and, well, Mississippi State sucks it this year. Ole Miss goes up against Tennessee, and the Rebels are considered a favorite. There isn’t much coming out of Knoxville these days.
