It has indeed been another one of them days. And, yes, we’re running bad late again. Feel free to contact my manager.
Anyhow. There’s been some movement in the Jan. 6 Committee, the one that’s investigating who knew what about the Great American Temper Tantrum. The committee, led by Mississippi’s Bennie Thompson, has issued subpoenas for a number of Trump loyalists, including presidential advisor, Leninist, and part-time meth enthusiast Steve Bannon and former deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino. Scavino? Yeah, that’s right. Anyhow, they’re trying to get Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows and future coffee-boy Kash Patel as well.
However, Bannon has announced he won’t be paying any attention to the subpoenas. We haven’t from the rest of the clowns, but Trump has claimed executive privilege over documents pertaining to the day that the committee also subpoenaed. One may wonder how a no-longer president can claim executive privilege when that person is no longer president, but it’s not exactly out of the question. However, it does rely on the go-to of current President Joe Biden.
And he’s told Trump to take a hike. However, Trump has another ace up his ill-fitting sleeve, in that he’s sent a letter to the National Archives. It states that the release of the requested documents to the Jan. 6 committee would constitute a danger to the office of the presidency, and that’s what he’s really concerned about.
Although the National Archives haven’t responded one way or another, it’s generally given they’ll tell him to skip rope, as well. He then could take legal action to halt the release, but it would require some serious mojo, and considering who he has willing to work for him – and he’s welshed on that, anyway – that’s could be a hard nut to crack.
Thompson (no relation) has said they will strongly consider criminal contempt charges should Bannon and his boys continue to dodge the subpoena. Remember, these are the people that regularly loosened their bowels over Hilary Clinton’s testimony over Benghazi and she never once ducked a subpoena. Of course, there’s a certain amount of cynicism among the hoi polloi over just how much sack Attorney General Merrick Garland is willing to show in this case. He’s been something of a disappointment in this area, reports say.
It’s important to remember that not only do the wheels of justice grind slow but the American government is also set up in such a way that it’s like pulling teeth to get anything done. The commission was put into effect the first of July but has recently got any momentum under its belt. As the last five years have taught us, most of Our Fellow Americans have little idea how government actually works when the rubber hits the road, regardless of their newfound passion. So, again, time will tell.
Let’s end with some good news. According to Mississippi Department of Health head Dr. Thomas Dobbs, COVID-19 seems to be letting up on us. Both in terms of reported cases and hospitalizations, the numbers have dropped dramatically. That being said, 96% of cases are among the unvaccinated and 40% of hospitalizations are kids under 12, and they can’t get the vaccine.
So, get the damn vaccine, you goons. Have a nice weekend.
