The Weekend: November 28-29, 2020

Well, let’s get this over with. My head’s not connected right now and I’m really not inclined to write anything or, for that matter, do anything besides go back to my book. Still, it’s best not to do like I did with last night’s Gibberish and wait until 11 p.m. to even get started.

With that in mind, here are the links to this week’s Gibberish. Like I said, I didn’t even bother starting Saturday until the literal last hour, so it’s not much to write home about. I actually got Thursday’s effort done fairly early but I forgot to actually post it until the next morning. Smooth. Beyond acknowledging Thanksgiving and everything good and bad that surrounds that, there really isn’t much there either.

Tuesday had some meat to it, though. It was the end of the “XX days of the 2020 Election” joke and an exploration into just why Trump, his cultists, and the GOP leadership are fighting so hard against reality. Trump’s easy to understand. He’s both trying to get more cash from the rubes and keep the wolves away from his door. He’s been able to skate a lot on some investigations because he’s President but I imagine the SDNY is going to come after him with pitchforks starting January 21.

It’s also easy to understand why the Republicans are backing his play, especially those in Congress. Any way they can hobble the incoming Democratic administration, they’ll take. That’s just politics. Plus, they know how venerable they are to the party base which is still fairly rabid about Trump. Again, that’s how politics works and anyone who is waiting for them to show anything but party loyalty has a very naïve view of politics.

But it’s the Base that’s interesting. I think it’s time we call a spade a spade here and acknowledge where we are and what we’re dealing with. Trump’s most fervent supports aren’t crazy or mentally ill. That’s not only ableist bullshit, it robs them of agency and, more importantly, responsibility. It’s the same reason they’re not “brainwashed” by some news service or even the president. That implies they’re doing this against their will, that if they were in their “right mind” they wouldn’t be this way. That is simply not true.

They’re not crazy or sick in the head or being fooled by a slick talker. They’re choosing this. They’re good with this. They honestly think the only way Trump could’ve lost is because he was screwed out his due. They don’t think black voters are viable. They don’t believe anything but what Trump tells them.

We need to stop mollycoddling these goobers. They’re not interested in “unity” and the vast bulk of the Republican Party is too beholden to the monster they’ve created over at least the past 30 years to do much about it. One way or another, they’ll be fine anyway. It’s like when soi-disant leftists claim they’ll vote for a Republican because of Biden’s cabinet picks. You’re not risking anything, so who cares?

It’s similar to the shtick libertarians have never been able to quite pull off. No one believes you’re really looking for much change when you decide that throwing with the scum of the Earth is your only option. You just don’t want to catch the shit you so richly deserve. Own it, man. At least the Trump cultists don’t pretend to be anything else.
