I like to think there isn’t much in the political world that can shock me anymore. Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not. After 30 years of adulterers calling for the impeachment of a president over a blowjob, guys on the down-low calling for limiting LGBT rights, the outright hypocrisy of the Republican party cast in relief during the Amy Coney-Barrett hearings, and the big-time media’s willingness to go with the idea that “The Rules” only apply to one part, I’d like to think nothing could pierce my force field of pure cynicism when it comes to American politics.

But what went down in Omaha, Nebraska, last night shocked the hell out of me. Long story short, Trump held one of his little rallies outside in 10-degree weather. His people bussed in a passel of old folks for the show. For whatever reason, the buses didn’t stay – perhaps they weren’t paid enough -and Trump left the scene after 90 minutes. The end result is all those older folks were stuck in freezing weather and forced to walk a couple of miles before safety, with many of them suffering hypothermia and other ailments while Omaha emergency services struggled to keep them alive.

Even worse, when asked whether Mike Pence holding a rally in Wisconsin today was a good idea when that state’s COVID-19 cases are spiking off the charts, his spokes goon Hogan Gidley said the VP had access to the best medical care available. Folks, they don’t care about you. Oh, sure, you might say no politicians really care about the people they serve, but these assholes have outright contempt for you and your safety. You’re just a pawn, a tool, and if you’re cool with that, boy, that’s on you. Me, I’m partial to politicians who have the class to at least pretend they don’t consider me a peasant if only because they know we can still make guillotines.

Maybe the saddest part of this whole deal is the stone fact that it probably won’t make a dent in the Base, even among the poor bastards who went through last night’s freeze. They’ll still be as feverishly mad for Trump than they were beforehand. It’s more than just the 40% of voters who’re hard-core wingnuts no matter what that makes for every election. This is their Savior, the one man who’ll make the madness and confusion of existence make sense and work properly. If it doesn’t? Well, it’s not his fault, bubba. Trump cannot fail, he can only be failed. Maybe you are doing something wrong, something that displeases him.

Ah, well. Moving on, Hurricane Zeta made landfall today around 4:30 p.m. Cajun Standard Time. It hit Louisiana as a Category Two near a little fishing town called Cocodrie in Terrebonne Parrish about 46 miles due south of Houma and across Lake Barre from Grand Isle. I drove down there once when I lived in New Orleans. Lovely part of the world. It’s a large storm with a lot of wind, and the path it’s taking is causing some North Carolina counties to go on Tropical Storm watch. It’s been dumping a mess of rain here on North Mississippi. If you’re in the path, keep an eye on the news and batten down the hatches.

Finally, despite Republican attempts to keep people from voting and President Crybaby’s own attempts to bullshit the populace, early voting is rolling strong, remarkably so. Joe Biden has a pretty solid lead across the country, even in tight states like Wisconsin. Regardless, Democratic gurus are cautious and encouraging as much turnout as possible on Election Day next week. That’s right, y’all, just six more days. And despite what anyone will try to tell you, all the ballots are not required to be counted on Election night nor has it ever been thus.

Politics is one thing. Dirty politics is quite another. Stupid politics, though? I just can’t forgive that.
